I’ve always thought that I wouldn’t be susceptible to hypnosis. Do You ever find that people like me are actually susceptible?

This is the kind of question I am frequently asked.  So it made sense to put it together as a blog entry.

Every one is susceptible to hypnosis, some more than most.   Of course, if you determined in your mind that you would not be affected by something, then you would have some degree of success in resisting what you are determined to resist.   I say some degree, because I’ve had subjects who fought the urge during an induction to close their eyes, so strongly that they had a tear streaming down from the corner of one or both eyes from the exertion of refusing to respond to the urge to blink.  What kind of (more…)

Well, I think that was the point being made by someone who posted the following statement, his words, not mine at Fetlife:

“Hypnosis is the Power of Suggestion. If you are willing to allow yourself to explore the right aspect of this, it should be done along with Transendental Meditation.

Yoga is a good avenue to follow with the understanding that you will not grasp it over night, it takes alot of study and the ability to be instructed by the right person as a channel to meditation. If successfully used the possibility of becoming a vessel for being truely Hypnotized and will be your recovery to a better life…”

And I say, when you are ready to be hypnotised and you meet a hypnotist that can get into your mind and that you trust enough to allow into your mind, then, candidly, being hypnotised is shockingly easy.  No need for hours of study of Yoga or lengthy periods of meditation to achieve this, so rest assured!

My actual response to him was:

That’s a pretty broad and sweeping statement.  Upon what did you base your findings/declaration?  No doubt those that practice Yoga often find deep levels of hypnotic suggestion easier to achieve, and again, the practice of meditation does more to assist an easy entry into a trance state than it could do to hinder.   In fact, I’d assumed that anyone that came to me and had a back-ground in Meditation or Yoga would be easy hypnotic prey and have a successful hypnotic outcome.  I guess it just depends on how one defines a successful hypnotic outcome.

I did recently have a subject who was very keyed up on his Yoga, mantras, Kundalini and the full shebang.  But while he entered deeper and deeper levels of trance as his session progressed (two hours), he didn’t respond to the erotically charged post hypnotic triggers I had planted in him, much to his own disappointment.  He was enjoying the depth of trance way too much, by his own admission and did leave floating, as it were, on a cloud, but longing for that little bit extra.

From the point of view that he entered trance, and went deeper each time and responded to instant re-induction triggers, it was a success.  But from the point of view of wanting to take it a step further to show him what his mind could achieve (apart from taking a deep break from conscious thought), we both came away wishing more could have happened.

The majority of my subjects (like me) have no interest in Yoga, reikki, or any new age trends, but this has not prevented them from experiencing profound – and I mean, totally mind blowing – hypnotic phenomena, from freezing, to hypnotic amnesia, to mind erasure (this is not about forgetting, it’s about having nothing in your mind to think about, no matter how much you may struggle to do so), to ruined orgasms, to multiple hypnotic orgasms, etc.

I shan’t be suggesting that any one with difficulty entering trance should consider Yoga a pre-requisite.”

I did find his post got me thinking though.   I have distorted reality, caused subjects to hallucinate, feel drunk, behave drunk, etc.   Now I feel curious about playing around with out-of-body experiences in future sessions with any subjects that are willing to experience this.  That is something I’ve never thought to do, but if it can happen via meditation, I’m feeling pretty confident it can happen with hypnosis.  The only thing cooler, I think, than out-of-body experiences, is lucid dreaming.   And lately, me and my friends, and family, have been having more than our share of this!  So, time to embrace a new form of hypnotic reality.

By the way, I know I’ve been difficult to get hold of lately.  There is so much going on.  But in person sessions are now back in full swings, as well as web cam (video) and phone sessions.  I shall get as many of you hypnotised before the end of the year as possible!

Have you ever watched a hypnosis arm levitation sequence and wondered about the mechanics of it? One of my subjects recently shared with me his experience of arm levitation during one of my online web cam sessions. He’s thoughtful enough to always send me feedback after his sessions. I learn alot from his recollections of the sessions.  Snatches of what he can remember of each session, or his observations on the outcomes afterwards.  I’m on this side of the pocket watch (metaphorically) doing what I do when I put a subject into hypnosis. But every single person responds (or not) differently to the same hypnotic techniques that work so well for one, and then bomb with the another.

In his case,the subject that wrote to me, not Antonio, he came to me to orignally achieve his dream of complete and irreversible bladder incontinence as part of his adult baby fetish. Not every one’s cup of tea, admittedly, but specific suggestions aside, the trance experience has a common thread. What I am sharing here from his email is his fascinating account of experiencing arm levitation. His feedback on his incontinence journey has been invaluable and often formed the basis for the next session, building upon, reinforcing, modifying. Each hypnotic journey is individual.

He’d expressed a desire that a part of the last session be playful, just me playing with his mind and body. For him to feel things happening to him and realise they were happening without his input. Of course, arm levitation is a wonderful candidate for something like this. As also is triggering him into instant sleep for deep trance while he is in the middle of a sentence. Like a chloroform soaked handkerchief when you least expect it. So, it was with this in mind that I used arm levitation for fun, as a deepener, and as an unwitting convincer where convincing was neither consciously needed nor offered.

Only when I read his email did I realise he had a pre-existing condition with his arm which in a conscious state makes raising that arm rather painful.  I wouldn’t have done the arm levitation if I’d realised this, even though hypnosis is an effective pain management tool.

Here is his story:

I will start with describing what I remember from the 4th session.

In fact there is only one sequence that I can remember very vividly. As I am a man of exact science, I never believed in arm levitation. An arm has a certain mass. To lift this mass you need some force. How can somebody execute this force when his body is totally relaxed? There is no other logical explanation for arm levitation than faking it and as such not being in a deep relaxing trance. Conclusion: arm levitation is useful during theatrical shows to convince the audience that there is some kind of magic going on.

When you started to tell me about my arms which soon would become lighter, an alarm went off in a far corner of my mind. My level of awareness increased and I was able to think again. I still felt very relaxed, but I was very aware of my body, legs and arms. I kind of panicked. You were actually announcing arm levitation and I knew, for sure, this would not happen. I quickly tried to decide if I would fake this to please you or if I would let you find out yourself when nothing happened. But how to fake before an experienced hypnotist? I was not sure about how an arm levitation should look like. My heart rhythm was still very slow, but it was bouncing very hard in my breast, throat and head.

Then suddenly my attention focussed onto my wrists. They were not touching the mattress anymore! And I was not yet ready to decide what to do! And you did not even yet started to count! Now I panicked even more. The panic got complete when I felt myself falling backwards (through the mattress?) and I could not grab the mattress to save me from falling down, because my hands and underarms did not touch the mattress anymore. I had nothing to hold on to anymore. I realised this was the moment I had to trust you in order to make things happen. Then the “lights” went out …

I open my eyes and at first I do not realise what I am looking at. It was rather fascinating to see two arms which were not mine. Those arms could not be mine, because I was totally relaxed and I was for sure not holding up my arms. I took a good look at the left one, because it moved slightly and doing so, time to time it came in front of the main light.

Here stops the only sequence I remember of this session. I now realise that arm levitation is possible. Those arms were mine, of course they were. Still I cannot explain why my left shoulder did not hurt when this all happened. A few days before I overloaded my left shoulder. In fact it still hurts a little when I raise my arm.

I had this guy hypnotized on Yahoo during a web cam show. And I had a post hypnotic trigger installed in him that he was not aware of. Basically, on hearing two clicks of my little clickers, he would freeze in the middle of what ever he was doing. Then I woke him up.

“Now, you do trust me, don’t you?”

“Yes,” he nodded. He knows I have no interest in making people strip on web cam.

Good, I’m going to ask you to do something for me. Can you take your T-shirt off?” he nodded and began to take it off. But there was a swift movement he made towards his face first, that I couldn’t make out.

Just at that point when he had his arms stretched up and cocooned by the T-shirt, I let off the clicks. I expected to see him frozen with his arms stuck in the air and the T-shirt wrapped around his head and arms.

Nothing happened.

I squinted in disbelief. How could this be? Even allowing for a 2 second delay in the transmission of my sound (the clicks) and his programmed obedience, he should have been frozen by now.

With the T-shirt off, he sat waiting his next instructions. He also picked something up and his hands went back up to his ears …

Head phones! He’d (sensibly) taken off his headphones before taking off the t-shirt. So he hadn’t heard the triggers. I started laughing. He laughed uncertainly not sure what the joke was.

“Okay, can I ask you to do something else for me? Can you take your glasses off slowly …”

This time he heard the post hypnotic trigger and responded as his subconscious mind had been programmed to. His eyes glazed over and his arms stiffened with the glasses an inch or so away from his face. Then I melted him with one word so he was able to move again. He smiled. “That was awesome,” All the more so since, thanks to post hypnotic amnesia, he had not seen that coming.

To give him a chance to share the trigger with others in the freezing and mannequin play community that he is active with, I put him back under again and planted another trigger that would work when he read it. Like in Instant messages, and phone text messages, or in emails.

But just as I was counting him back, he lost his connection. I dialled him back and got a voice mail. He was clearly still in trance. I’d been counting on the sound of the ringer to wake him. Mischievously, I clicked my clicker twice. He’ll hear that one later.

Then I waited for him to call me back. But then I realised that if he was still asleep, waiting for the command to wake up, that call could b a long time in coming. It would come, but how long his subconscious mind chose to just chill would be anyone’s guess. Then it rang and I was relieved. It had only been a couple of minutes.

“What happened?” he asked.

“You seemed to lose your connection,” I offered.

“All I know is I woke up with my face buried in my mattress.”

Oh, he was asking what had happened before he lost the connection. Amnesia again.

Well, I can report that the additional triggers worked just as well. He was like a kid on Christmas day, stumbling upon yet another well concealed Christmas present, just when he thought there couldn’t possibly be any more.
